VIDEOCONFERENCES FOR 2010-11 SCHOOL YEAR
Upcoming Video Conferences:
Past Video Conferences:
[11.16.2010] Stand Up. Speak Out. Lend a Hand! On Tuesday, November 16, 2010, students of Ms. Cohens class at Liberty Middle School participated in a video conference with Gerda Weissmann Klein, renowned motivational speaker and Holocaust survivor, and taught each one of the students about tolerance, understanding and making a difference. Gerda Klein’s spirit helped her survive six years under Nazi rule; through her story, and her unique perspective, she continues to help each one of us to understand the dangers of hate and extremism.
Students involved in STAND UP. SPEAK OUT. LEND A HAND heard from Gerda during a special interactive videoconference event and will embark upon their own service learning projects. Each participating school will be tasked with designing and implementing a service learning project that combats social issues in their community.
In order to maintain an on-going dialogue over the course of the project, each class will create a wiki page and posting bi-weekly updates on their projects. Once a month, schools will be assigned a partner class who will review and comment on their wiki page (and vice versa). Students will then reconvene via videoconference to share their service learning projects with the Klein Foundation during a celebratory "Project Collaboration Videoconference" in March. We will break schools into smaller groups for project sharing to encourage dialogue among students!
[10.20.2010] Hangzhou International School, China: On Wednesday, Oct. 20, students of Ms. Yajing Li’s Honors Chinese 3 and 4 classes at WOHS had a video conference with students from our sister school, Hangzhou International School in China. The conference lasted for 1 hour with each group speaking in both Chinese and English. The students exchanged ideas about their hobbies, opinions, favorites, and even current political topics. Our students were both surprised and pleased to find that the Chinese students like to listen to such popular music as Lady GaGa, The Beatles, and The Back Street Boys, and how familiar they are with the American life. They exchanged after school activities, and found out both schools have model UN, Key Club and Drama club, and more.
Our Chinese students came back asking if we will have future video conferences with Hangzhou International School. Both groups were impressed with each other's second language ability. It was obvious that the direct conversation has enhanced the students understanding of each other’s culture and global views.
[10.19.2010] The Power of Video Conferencing: West Orange High School Teachers were shown the power of video conferencing by connecting to serveral video conference providers. Teachers went on a virtual field trip to the Royal Botanical Gardens, the Pro Football Hall of Fame and Access NJ provided by Verizon.
